Duncan McArthur letter to Othniel Looker, 1814 October 9.

Consists of one autograph letter signed by Duncan McArthur to Othniel Looker of Chillicothe, Ohio, announcing his arrival in Detroit with the Ohio mounted riflemen, telling of his experiences with the Indians, and stating that without supplies and no forage "to be had" in Detroit he may have no other choice but "to make an expedition with the mounted men which may be servicable to our country--otherwise we can do nothing." The letter is dated 9 October 1814 from Detroit.

Duncan McArthur was born in Dutchess County, New York, and grew up in western Pennsylvania before becoming one of the first settlers of Chillicothe, Ohio. McArthur served in the Ohio militia during the War of 1812 and was later appointed brigadier general in United States Army, was elected twice to the U.S. House of Representatives, and was the eleventh Governor of Ohio (1830-1832).
